Mamta joined Groupon because she recognized how her team could make a real impact, and that’s exactly what she’s done since she came on board!
Tell us a little about your role and your team.
We’re responsible for making the merchant experience seamless, from onboarding to managing their deals, and building transparency on the Groupon Platform. This involves empowering the merchants and sharing suggestions to facilitate a profitable engagement with Groupon. The entire experience is fueled by our robust merchant platform, which is the heartline of the merchant business.
I am passionate about this team, as we are directly responsible for bringing supply to the platform. We are focussed on empowering merchants, and increasing their engagement via Self Service tools for ease of use anywhere and anytime.
My typical day is full of interactions with Engineering, Product teams and stakeholders, to ensure we all stay connected to our goals, vision and roadmaps. We strive to have a healthy innovative culture amongst our teams.
What is the greatest challenge COVID-19 has presented to your team?
As a team, our main focus is on Self Service tools for our Local merchants. With the COVID-19 pandemic, sustainability became a challenge for local merchants. Therefore, as an organization there were many measures put in place to support merchants, such as COVID safety banners, small business loan notifications and long term projects like Campaign Editor, etc. There was a need to quickly switch gears with our roadmap, and time to market became one of the key deliverables, and as a team, we had to be both adaptable and agile.
How are you staying connected with your team as we’re all working remotely?
Regular connections with the team help us stay aligned. We continue to have our typical checkpoints, team meetings etc., but what really works for us are the quick/casual touch-points over Zoom.
What has been your proudest moment so far at Groupon?
The Merchant Engineering team is rolling out new tools to empower, engage and enable our merchants. In a nutshell, we are changing the way merchants work within the Groupon platform by providing self-service tools to meet their business needs.
What project currently excites you the most?
Last year we developed a product called the “Campaign Manager”, allowing merchants to have full control over their Campaign within our merchant portal, which wasn’t something they previously had the ability to do. Developing features that ease the merchant journey and help to drive engagement directly correlate with the company’s vision and strategy, and that’s really exciting!
What piece of career advice would you give candidates looking to join Groupon?
Groupon is a place where there is no limit to the exposure and learning that you can dwell into. If you’re looking for a dynamic environment and have the ability to adapt to business needs, you will definitely uncover your potential. Groupon Engineering operates with a startup mindset, where knowledge sharing is encouraged across teams, “Tech Talks” occur on the regular, and everyone is always ready to jump in and help, which makes for an inclusive and collaborative work culture!
What do you love about your job?
The enormous amount of opportunities and support from Leadership to offer different perspectives and approaches to a problem. Our work is very agile, so there is a need to adapt based on both our internal and external environment, which I enjoy, as it involves evaluating and envisioning both short-term and long-term perspectives.
Why would you recommend a career within your team?
As a team, we don’t hesitate approaching a problem with a new mindset. We are open to evaluate, attempt and adapt accordingly. We value each other’s contributions and build cohesive teams that fully understand the value they are adding, which keeps us motivated. We ensure the projects we’re working on are directly aligned with our OKR goals, which helps to create a transparent environment.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I would prefer not to restrict myself to any Leadership style. We adapt based on the situation and many external factors. That said, I strongly believe in my team and completely empower them to make decisions. I help them to understand the rationale behind the ask/need, which in turn helps to gain their consent.
What do you look for when you hire?
I focus heavily on the attitude, adaptability and passion to learn, when we hire a team member. This is highly necessary in this landscape where we are developing products from scratch. It involves a lot of brainstorming, understanding different rationales, personas and usability. Positive attitude towards changes and learning new things as they come help in building a cohesive, cross-functional team.
What advice do you have for women who want to pursue a career in engineering?
The key mantra that I have followed in my professional life is to “Always Lean In”. Different phases in life pose different challenges, and we can get through them by not giving up.
What is one non-work activity or hobby that you’re into? How did you get into it?
Learning something new every day. It started with my son who continuously (and enthusiastically) asks detailed questions about anything and everything, which requires me to do a bit of research. Right now we’re focusing on the solar system.
What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a kid?
Anchoring a travel TV show. (Earn a living traveling the world!)
What do you miss about being in the office?
Casual connections with team members over coffee or lunch. Basically, the quick/informal conversations that build/maintain a personal connection with everyone.
Your favorite pre-Covid activity you can’t wait to get back to?
I love traveling to new places. Badly waiting to start back on our regular routine of trips/ vacations. The backlog is overflowing
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Always be truthful, transparent, adapt, improvise and stay focussed on the goal. This has helped not only to maintain clarity in my thoughts but also imbibe a similar vision with my team.
Where were you before you joined Groupon? What brought you here?
I was working with Amadeus before joining Groupon. I have primarily worked in many B2B business models in various domains like Banking, Funds, Location Intelligence, Travel.
I aspired to join an organization where I would have clarity on two things. 1) The contribution I will be making to the mission and vision of the company. 2) Leadership, where I can continue to grow into the best version of myself.
These were both easy to see with Groupon, and I’m so glad I joined!
