In the process, we’re positively impacting the lives of millions of customers and merchants globally. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success. If you want to take more ownership of your career, then you're ready to be part of Groupon.

The Merchant Payments Engineering team develops and manages a global disbursement platform that pays merchants in over a dozen countries representing Groupon’s largest markets. Our business partners include representatives of all of the major business lines and products at Groupon as well as functional teams in accounting and finance across the world. When you buy almost anything on Groupon–a television, a few nights at a hotel, a restaurant reservation, a ticket to a concert–our platform figures out how much we owe the merchant and makes sure that money gets to their bank account quickly and correctly.

The most exciting aspect of the platform is its scale, with millions of merchant payments made amounting to billions of dollars, all orchestrated within an ecosystem of hundreds of other services at Groupon. Every payment must be on time and accurate. It’s a huge challenge.

We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. We're curious, fun, a little intense, and kind of obsessed with helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a compelling place to work?

You’ll spend time on the following:

  • Being a technical leader who will help drive the product and team culture which is focused on inclusivity, ownership, and collaboration
  • Collaborating with Product and Engineering management to understand requirements and design flexible solutions for our global systems
  • Implementing, testing, deploying, and providing production support in weekly iterations
  • Mentoring and helping grow the other engineers on the team

We’re excited about you if you have:

  • 8+ years of developing and supporting software
  • Deep knowledge of a dynamic or functional programming language
  • Experience in Ruby and Java
  • Experience working with relational databases (MySQL and Postgres) and web technologies.
  • A desire to do pair programming
  • A dedication to writing well-tested code
  • The ability to communicate with non-engineering teams throughout the company as we frequently work with Product, Accounting, and Support teams.

We value engineers who are:

  • Customer-focused: We believe that doing what’s right for the customer is ultimately what will drive our business forward.
  • Obsessed with quality: Your production code just works & scales linearly
  • Team players. You believe that more can be achieved together. You listen to feedback and also provide supportive feedback to help others grow/improve.
  • Fast learners: We are willing to disrupt our existing business to trial new products and solutions. You love learning how to use new technologies and then rapidly apply them to new problems.
  • Pragmatic: We do things quickly to learn what our customers desire. You know when it’s appropriate to take shortcuts that don’t sacrifice quality or maintainability.
  • Owners: Engineers at Groupon know how to positively impact the business.
