Description

Groupon is an experience marketplace that brings people more ways to get the most out of their city or wherever they may be. By enabling real-time mobile commerce across local businesses, live events and travel destinations, Groupon help people find and discover experiences––big and small, new and familiar––that make for a full, fun and rewarding life. Groupon helps local businesses grow and strengthen customer relationships––resulting in strong, vibrant communities. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success.

Are you a passionate, energetic and technology enthusiast eager to work at a rapid pace with the flexibility to work across our suite of technologies? Are you a problem solver; someone who enjoys debugging code, resolving issues, and creating solutions for common problems? Do you get a little obsessed with the details?

We work as part of Groupon’s Bookable Marketplace team to provide a booking platform to our merchants and consumers. We are developing microservices and modern frontend applications using modern technologies. We use Java, Ruby, React, Redux, Kubernetes on a daily basis.

We are focused on modernising our platform and scaling our booking solution to our local merchants globally. This is your chance to influence how software is built and deployed on a company-wide scale.

We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. We're curious, fun, a little intense, and kind of obsessed with helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a compelling place to work?

Role

You are a technical leader supporting cross-functional teams. You usually report to a manager of managers and provide technical leadership for all the teams in that organization, even if you don't spend your attention evenly between them. You are aware of the needs of the business within your domain, and design solutions that are not just technically strong, but solve the right problem in the right way for the business. You are not just a technical expert, but an expert in the business problems you address. You often work through other engineers, designing systems that have a large impact on the business and ensuring that the teams working on components of those designs are aligned.

You’ll spend time on the following:

  • Lead and review the technical design and implementation of our systems within the group.

  • Lead complex cross-organization efforts that deliver high business value

  • Gain a deep understanding of our core business and focus on solutions that form better architecture, not just better code.

  • Drive initiatives across engineering teams with a focus on increasing application performance and scalability.

  • Deliver on commitments and proactively reports changes in the plan along with recommended solutions.

  • Work closely with other engineers within your group and across the product and engineering organization to identify problems and build effective technical solutions.

  • Own high-level KPIs and metrics and plan for and guide decisions to achieve significant improvements in them.

  • Identify and share best practices across the company.

  • Identify and cultivate engineering candidates.

  • Advocate for and improve upon our tech culture principles.

  • Mentor junior team members and encourage your peers to do the best possible work.

We’re excited about you if you have:

  • At least 8+ years of experience in software development.

  • Excellent coding skills in one or more languages: Java, Python or Ruby.

  • Development experience with service-oriented architectures/microservices.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively through an agile development process that promotes constant team communication.

  • Ability to decompose complex and large technical problems into smaller designs.

  • Ability to influence and implement best practices for software development in large organizations.

  • Demonstrable full lifecycle ownership (development, testing, deployment, operations).

  • Ability to effectively coach and guide other engineers you work with.

We value engineers who are:

  • Customer-focused: We believe that doing what’s right for the customer is ultimately what will drive our business forward.

  • Concerned with Quality: Have standards, do things the right way, avoid repetition

  • Team players: You believe that more can be achieved together. You listen to feedback and also provide supportive feedback to help others grow/improve.

  • Mindful: You maintain a healthy work-life balance and encourage others to.

  • Pragmatic: We do things quickly to learn what our customers desire. You know when it’s appropriate to take shortcuts that don’t sacrifice quality or maintainability.

  • Owners: Engineers at Groupon know how to positively impact the business.
