Groupon is an experiences marketplace that brings people more ways to get the most out of their city or wherever they may be. By enabling real-time mobile commerce across local businesses, live events and travel destinations, Groupon helps people find and discover experiences––big and small, new and familiar––that make for a full, fun and rewarding life. Groupon helps local businesses grow and strengthen customer relationships––resulting in strong, vibrant communities. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success.

As a global e-commerce organization with millions of customers and thousands of employees in multiple countries, Groupon presents exciting challenges for our Legal department to tackle. The Legal team is a global function that handles the commercial, regulatory, employment, IP, risk, and fraud matters at Groupon.

Groupon is looking for a highly motivated individual to advise Groupon’s North America, EMEA, and global businesses on all aspects of the company’s brand protection and enforcement strategy, related IP issues, and associated risks. This person will collaborate and work cross-functionally across the Legal department and across all business channels, including product, marketing, Groupon Goods, information security, corporate development, and other departments. This is an exciting and potentially transformational position that offers the opportunity to shape your role in an ever-changing organization.

We are a “best of both worlds” kind of company. We are big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of ownership and can make a meaningful impact. We are curious, fun, a little intense, and kind of obsessed with helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a compelling place to work?

You’ll spend time on the following:

  • Primary responsibility for all aspects of trademark clearance, selection, filing, registration and maintenance, including day-to-day management of an existing portfolio

  • Oversee the management and processing of all third-party IP claims, prior to litigation, for Groupon globally

  • Primary responsibility for reviewing all television, online, and print advertising for Groupon globally for IP risk

  • Refine and implement company policies and processes around vetting third-party goods for authenticity for our Groupon Goods channel

  • Counsel all business verticals, marketing, product, and engineering teams on use of third-party IP

  • Manage and partner with outside counsel to maintain the highest levels of service

  • Think critically and creatively while being a trusted adviser to the business, to the Managing Counsel, Global IP, and the General Counsel

We’re excited if you have:

  • JD with an active bar membership

  • 3-5+ years’ experience at a reputable law firm and/or corporate legal department

  • Extensive hands-on experience advising clients on brand protection and enforcement strategies

  • Experience handling third-party IP claims through successful resolution and implementing appropriate anti-counterfeiting controls

  • Experience with relevant online, print, and broadcast IP issues

  • Both a self-directed and a highly collaborative skill set that enables leading projects independently while effectively working with colleagues in legal and other stakeholders in a dynamic and fast-paced environment

  • Good judgment and the necessary business acumen to identify and assess risk in the context of the organization's goals and help develop creative, business-oriented solutions to complex legal issues

  • The ability to work on multiple matters at once, and to execute work quickly, efficiently and with excellence while meeting deadlines under pressure

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate legal matters effectively at all levels and across the organization
