Application Support Engineer - Internal Tools

Description

Groupon is an experiences marketplace that brings people more ways to get the most out of their city or wherever they may be. By enabling real-time mobile commerce across local businesses, live events and travel destinations, Groupon helps people find and discover experiences––big and small, new and familiar––that make for a full, fun and rewarding life. Groupon helps local businesses grow and strengthen customer relationships––resulting in strong, vibrant communities. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success.

Our Sales Enablement Engineering Team supports Groupon’s sales and sales operation teams in the onboarding, management and retention of Groupon Merchants.  We build and maintain a variety of solutions that enable Groupon to grow and maintain our marketplace.

We are looking for an Application Support Engineer to join the team. This role provides global, world-class post-production support to all sales related tools that require our assistance. You will investigate errors and workflow blockers, and work with your fellow Engineering and Product teams to provide resolution as needed. You will work directly as part of an engineering team supporting the onboarding of merchant deals to the Groupon website. While your main responsibilities will be ensuring user issues are resolved, this position offers the ability to learn about all the services involved in the Groupon supply chain and contribute to the  improvement of those services for Groupon employees by recognizing patterns in issues. Based on personal abilities, the job also offers the chance to develop core engineering skills as you help debug and fix problems.

We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. We're curious, fun, a little intense, and kind of obsessed with helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a great way to grow your career? Let's get into the details:

You’ll spend time on the following:

  • Improve reliability, quality, and time-to-market of our suite of software solutions

  • Provide primary operational support and engineering for multiple large distributed software applications

  • Gather and analyze metrics from both operating systems and applications to assist in performance tuning and fault finding

  • Partner with core engineering teams to improve services through rigorous testing and release procedures

  • Participate in system design consulting, platform management, and capacity planning

  • Build software and systems to automate platform infrastructure and applications monitoring & support

  • Create and maintain documentation for your projects

  • First-touch handling and prioritization of emails and incident tickets

  • Maintain ownership of issues

  • Escalate complex or novel issues after triage, troubleshooting, and summarizing

  • Maintain incident SLAs, and deliver on service agreements with internal teams

  • Investigate ways to improve current technology and business processes

  • Engage off-hours engineering resources with clear escalation goals

  • Translating technology concepts into business language for end user

We’re excited about you if you have:

  • 1+ year of IT support or related experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering or Coding Bootcamp certificate

  • Ability to work with web technologies (understand protocols and requests, read/write scripts)

  • Experience in one major object oriented programming language (Java, Ruby, etc)

  • Experience with relational databases such as Postgres and/or MySQL

  • Understanding/Experience in distributed systems/micro services

  • Experience handling support requests through a issue tracking system, using clear and detailed communication

  • A curious and can-do mindset, where you learn more about the IT environment and tackle additional responsibilities

  • A proactive approach to spotting problems, areas for improvement, and performance bottlenecks

  • You have a meticulous attention to detail and have delivered results while juggling multiple initiatives

  • You have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and can understand and explain customer situations and solutions

  • You take a positive approach to problems - both big and small

  • You work effectively both independently and as a part of a team
