Title: Senior Data Engineer
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Preferred Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
Tugba wanted have true ownership over her work in Data Engineering, so she packed her bags, moved from Turkey to Ireland, and joined #TeamGroupon. (And is so happy she did, we should add!)
Where were you before you joined Groupon? What brought you here?
I was working as a Data/Business Intelligence Engineer with various financial companies back in Istanbul, Turkey. I wanted to experience living in Europe, learn more about big data, and work in a less structured/more ownership-focused company, so I chose Groupon and moved to Dublin!
What’s your favorite programming language?
Tabs or spaces?
Tabs: they are more structured.
OK now tell us about your job! What do you do? What do you love about it?
I am passionate about data and what it can provide to the business. Data gives you the power to know, drive the business, and understand your customer better. Working on the Data Warehouse team with the most up-to-date technologies to maintain the data, learning new things everyday, and seeing how much your work can impact the company are what motivate me the most.
What’s unique about Groupon’s Engineering culture?
- The diversity and opportunity to work on the newest technologies
- The ownership you have over your work
- The connection between engineering teams
- How you can find the help you are looking for whenever you are challenged by a technical subject
What’s been the most challenging or rewarding thing you’ve worked on?
I’ve led and completed a challenging GDPR project with a team of 5-6 people. We worked on petabytes of data to make our Data Warehouse compliant, with a non-changeable deadline and non-changeable requirements. We had to change thousands of codes within the given timeline and designed new applications required by the GDPR regulations. Leading a team and delivering a successful project which is very critical for the company was very challenging but rewarding for me.
What advice do you have for someone interested in joining Groupon?
Be ready to work on all the technical challenges that will come on your way! Also, be prepared for the global scope of Groupon: you have to be flexible with time zones. In the end, Groupon is a place where you will learn a lot of things both personally and technically.
What do you think people would be surprised to learn about Groupon Engineering?
How much exposure you get to new technologies, the amount of data and services we have, and how many talented engineers there are from all around the world.
What’s your favorite part about your team’s Software Development process?
We have built many in-house tools we use everyday. Instead of relying on commercial products, we have our talented engineers building these and maintaining them instead.
Have you made any contributions to the tech community?
I’ve given a Tech Talk on GDPR and Enterprise Data Warehouse at Groupon Dublin. I talked about the technical challenges and the amount of changes we have done and why we have done them. I also mentored every junior engineer who started working on the EDW Dublin team. I also push my team to create better documentation which is sometimes missed in a lot of engineering teams. Additionally I’m a Bar Raiser Trainee and I will be conducting interviews for all Engineering candidates across all teams in Groupon to find the best fit.
How does your work impact Groupon’s mission of building the daily habit in local commerce?
We provide data to all of Groupon’s business units which require any kind of marketing- or sales-related insights.
What keeps you fulfilled outside of work?
I travel a lot. I’m in love with nature, so I love hikes and walks. I am so lucky to be living in a country that has so much natural beauty to offer.
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be and why?
I would be a tour guide, showing people exciting things in new places.
