Title: Talent Acquisition Manager
Location: Chicago, IL
Preferred Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
Sarah—or “Duffy” as she’s fondly called on the Recruiting team—brings her contagious enthusiasm to the People Blog and reflects on nearly 10 years of building teams at Groupon.
What was your first impression of Groupon?
It was very hard to wrap my head around everyone being in jeans and casual attire. I always came from environments where I was in a suit everyday, so I had to invest in buying more jeans, which of course I didn't mind...it just took me a few months to adjust to wearing jeans everyday, lol. I also loved how genuine the people I met were and how they truly loved their job and working for Groupon! This just makes for a contagious atmosphere and a place you want to be every day!
What are some best practices for candidates to keep in mind while they’re applying or interviewing here?
While we've been in a remote working environment, I think we've been more reliant on technology, especially with having Zoom interviews in place of our onsite interviews. I think it's important for candidates to get comfortable having conversations and being interviewed over Zoom. The interview process is really the same, but just remote, so I always encourage candidates to prepare as they would for in-person interviews. Be mindful of what's important to you about working in a remote environment and make sure to ask questions around that in your interviews as well.
What’s your favorite conference room?
Years ago we had a conference room called "Heated Toilet". While I love and appreciate all of our unique conference room names, I was always slightly embarrassed when I escorted candidates to that particular room, and even spooked a candidate when I told them I was bringing them to the "Heated Toilet" before explaining that it was just the name of the conference room. For the most part, candidates got a good laugh and enjoyed seeing the different names while we toured the office, as it's a great example of the different things that make our offices fun and unique!
There are a lot of amazing Groupon stories. What are you most proud of?
Since I have been here for almost 10 years, I've lost count of how many people I have hired, but I love seeing and working with teams that I have helped to build entirely. It makes me proud to watch them grow and witness what they have accomplished over the years. It also gives me pride to see that many of them have been with Groupon for several years, including our Boomerangs who have left and found their way back!
Where did you grow up and how did you get into Talent Acquisition?
I grew up in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago and went to Eastern Illinois University to major in Fashion Merchandising. I was pretty certain I wasn't going to get a job in fashion, but still enjoyed the coursework. I had no idea what direction I wanted to take my career after graduation, and it wasn't until a conversation I had with my brother and sister-in-law that I considered pursuing a career in Recruiting/Human Resources. They asked me what I enjoyed most about college, and I immediately thought of recruitment week for my sorority! Ever since, I was determined to build a career in recruiting and here I am 14 years later!
How have you grown since joining Groupon?
I've always been on the Talent Acquisition team here and have had many opportunities to grow in my role by gaining more responsibilities over the years and have recruited for new teams and positions I've never recruited for before. I've also had the chance to become a manager for the first time, and develop my coaching and mentorship skills.
What do you miss about being in the office?
I miss seeing my co-workers, having random run-ins with people I haven't seen in awhile, and having fun conversations that weren't planned!
What do you love about your job?
I love that every day is a different day. I'm talking and meeting with new people constantly both outside and inside of Groupon. I love that I have the chance to work with different teams in the company and am constantly learning.
How are you staying connected with your team as we’re all working remote?
Of course we're all staying connected through Zoom meetings, google chats, and other resources we have to talk throughout the day. I have come to really enjoy the "walking" meetings and 1-on-1's. It's not only still staying connected, but it's getting exercise while also chatting on the phone versus having to be in front of the computer. It also gives you the opportunity to catch up on things outside of work. It's like the walk and talk chats you missed having in the office or the lunch chats.
What was your first job?
In an antique shop in High School. This was not my first choice, but my mom, being a huge antique lover, was able to get me a job at one of them when I was 15. I still to this day am pretty proud of my knowledge in antiques.
What is one non-work activity or hobby that you're into? How did you get into it?
I love riding my bike! It's something I've always enjoyed since I was a kid, but something I've been able to have more of an opportunity to do since the pandemic and working remotely. I especially love biking along the river near my house.
