While his childhood dreams of becoming a Zoologist didn’t pan out, he’s come to enjoy the ever-changing challenges of software development. I sensei good read ahead...
Tell us a little about your role and your team. I’m a Front End Engineer on the Merchandising Experience & Intelligence team. My team provides the tools that Marketing, SEO and Merchandising teams need in order to create pages, campaigns and overall content used by Groupon’s customers. My specific role is to take care of the Front End part of the software that we create, ensuring and improving usability and code quality.
Before getting into things, how has your day-to-day changed in light of Covid-19? I was already used to working one day a week from home, and always liked it. When the pandemic hit and we were all forced to work every day from home, it felt very natural to me.
Where did you grow up and how did you get into Software Development? Even though I’m Italian, I grew up in Málaga, south of Spain. I’ve always been fascinated by computers and videogames, but I didn’t point my career to that direction initially. I’ve studied Biology at the University of Granada, before completing, I switched from one thing to the next trying to find my path in life. After attempting several things, I stumbled upon coding by pure chance while studying to become a computer technician. The moment I wrote my first line of HTML code in a notepad document was the moment I understood that this was what I was waiting for. After that, I focused all my energy into learning web development by myself until I landed my first job, and the rest is history.
What do you love about your job? I love the constant ever-changing challenges. As a Software developer, there is always a plethora of problems to solve. This keeps me motivated, paired with my love for Front End technologies. Combine these two factors with the satisfaction of seeing how I improved a users’ experience and, maybe even, a users’ work day.
How does your team prioritize the ideas you should build? We focus on what users need. We will prioritize, usually, by how big of an impact each feature will have on users. The more useful the feature can be to a wider number of users the higher priority it will receive. We use this as a rule of thumb, but we also take into account bigger feature blocks in the roadmap, world events, holidays, particular target areas for the business, etc. Feature priorities are decided amongst engineering, business and product teams.
How have you grown in your career since joining Groupon? Since I joined Groupon as a Front End Engineer, I’ve had the opportunity to conduct technical interviews, mentor fellow colleagues, give technical talks, interact with users and the business, etc. Groupon offers you every opportunity to grow if you’re willing to take it. I’ve expanded my knowledge and my professional experience substantially due to these growth opportunities.
What piece of career advice would you give candidates looking to join Groupon? This is a vibrant and open community, one of the best (if not the best) working environments I’ve been a part of throughout my career. Bring a lot of enthusiasm and energy, know that your opinions and ideas count, and you’ll be given opportunities to grow and to explore new things. Engineering wise, prepare to learn a lot while still having the chance to put your expertise to use by improving existing projects, teaching other colleagues, interviewing new candidates, creating new projects from scratch, participating in hackathons, etc.
What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a kid? I wanted to be a Zoologist specialized in Ornithology.
Favorite pre-Covid activity you can’t wait to get back to? Travel around the world freely and without concerns.
What is one non-work activity or hobby that you’re into? How did you get into it? Contact sports. I started Kung-Fu when I was around 5 years old, and since then I’ve done many other contact sports such as: Judo, Capoeira, Muay Thai, BJJ, Krav Maga, etc. I love them because I feel free while practicing them, and I can channel my energy while staying fit and also learning self-defense.
What have you gained from working at Groupon? Weight and a beard (ba dumm tss ). On a more serious note, I’ve made incredible acquaintances and my team’s environment is great. I’ve also had the chance to live in Ireland and explore it, one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.
If you could take your pick of any other job within Groupon, which job would you want? CEO. I’m very curious about discovering how many things need to be taken into account in order to decide anything in a company that spreads wide across the globe like Groupon does.
