Tell us about your job! What do you do?
I am an Inbound Sales Representative. I help merchants find areas of potential expansion and set them up with Groupon deals. My typical day consists of calling Merchants to speak with them about their business needs and goals, while also setting up the Groupon deal to be prepped to go on the site. I love being able to talk to people from all over the United States and Canada. Being in this role has taught me about things I never would have considered learning about, like different outdoor activities and car maintenance!
What was your first impression of Groupon as an employer?
My first impression of Groupon as an employer was “open”. Groupon does an amazing job of keeping its employees in the loop on any changes happening— no matter how big or how small.
What brought you to Groupon?
I was already working in Sales and Marketing, but I wanted to be with a larger company that had room for growth and would challenge me. Here, there are so many different events and opportunities for me to connect with new people and network.
Tell us about something challenging you’ve worked on here.
The most challenging thing I encountered working at Groupon was adjusting to the scale! Since I was switching from a very small business with a handful of employees, to a large company with thousands of employees, I very much felt like a small fish in a big pond. Fortunately, after a few weeks of being here, I learned how friendly and accepting people are. I have made several friends that I not only enjoy at work but also outside office hours.
Who inspires you?
My daughter inspires me the most. I watch how she sees the world differently from adults. She has the ability to always see a silver lining and find a reason to smile or laugh— no matter what is going on. I hope to take those qualities into every area of my life. I also have a toddler who I see learning about boundaries and the world. He has such a fresh perspective and makes me want to be and do better every day.
Describe the proudest moment you’ve had at Groupon.
While working in Inbound, I realized most of my peers didn’t know or understand how to work with Ethnic hair merchants. I saw that Groupon was missing out on a 1.2 trillion dollar market because of something as simple as not knowing the verbiage for speaking to merchants about hair deals, and needing to structure them in a way that would drive more customers to the business. So, I reached out to one of my Divisional Sales Managers about training our department to have a better understanding of how to engage our merchants on ethnic hair deals. After creating the training tools, I sent them to my manager, who then sent them to the trainers in the Phoenix office! I’m happy to say that, because of the encouragement I received from my managers, we now train inbound teams on how to create Ethnic Hair deals. I enjoyed partnering across offices to create educational content that was helpful to my colleagues in CHI, PHX and ultimately around the globe.
Have you won any awards at Groupon?
I won the Global Green Award for Respect, Integrity, and Inclusion, received the High Five Award from my fellow peers, and the Cat Eye Award for being inclusive in my department. I have also been Inbound Rep of the Week multiple times and have received recognition as an “Inbound Baller” averaging at 136.08% to goal for the quarter. Last but not least, I have been recognized for constantly exceeding my sales goals and my average quarterly gross billing earnings being at 98K.
What’s the most interesting thing about you?
I love to travel solo. I’ve lived alone in the Dominican Republic and have spent weeks adventuring in Mexico. I’m counting down the days until my next solo adventure!
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be and why?
I would be Mayor of Chicago! I love my city, I love how beautiful and diverse it is. I also love fighting for others and standing up for what I believe in.
Are you active in any Business Resource Groups?
Yes, I am the Communications Liaison for Blacks in Groupon and Allies! I joined because I’ve always wanted to work with a diverse and inclusive company— and I was excited to find what Groupon had to offer in that department. I have been challenged to step out of my shell in this role, but with that, I found new areas of growth and skills that I didn’t know were there. Not to mention, every time I meet with the team I really feel welcomed and like I am a part of a family.
What’s your favorite local business?
My favorite is Uncle Julios! They have the best carne asada I have ever had and amazing margaritas!
Your role probably exists at other companies, so what is it about Groupon that keeps you excited to come to work every day?
What keeps me at Groupon is the environment. Every person I have encountered thus far has been kind and welcoming. I enjoy going to work events and celebrating our accomplished goals with my team. My managers all have open-door policies, and I can go to them for anything I need.
What advice do you have for someone interested in joining Groupon?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help or more training! The more you know the better. After all, there is always room for personal and professional growth!
