Title: Senior Director of Corporate Recruiting
Location: Chicago, IL
Preferred pronouns: She/Her/Hers
You don’t have to be a former 8th grade class president to build amazing teams at Groupon…but it helps!
Tell us about your job! What do you do? What do you love about it? What does a typical day look like?
As a manager of people—whose commodity is people—no day is ever the same. We continue to build and grow teams daily. We are sales people, we are counselors, we are ambassadors, we are admins, we are tour guides, we are cyber stalkers, we are triage, we are damage control. Once you’re a recruiter, you are always a recruiter. Whether you’re in the office from 8-5 or at a party on a Friday night, everyone wants to talk about Groupon. I take a lot of pride in my team, their development, and the growth and success of Groupon. I can look back on the past 11 years and say, “We built this!” That is pretty powerful.
What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve worked on?
My team was tasked with hiring 300 people in 3 weeks when we first launched GrouponNow. I get anxious just thinking about it! Daily challenges of refilling the same job, over and over is challenging and can be exhausting. Retain and grow your people. : )
You’ve been at Groupon for 11 years. What about the company has kept you here?
Hands down, the people. I've worked with the best in the business. The work is the work, and yes, there are times when this is h.a.r.d, but I love doing this work alongside people I can trust, have fun with, and most importantly, laugh with. We are also still in build mode, and every person can make an impact and change the status quo. We don't do things because they have always been done that way. We challenge each other to make it better. Lastly, the product. I love helping small businesses thrive. I recommend anyone reading this consider joining us. You won't regret it!
What’s your favorite Groupon memory?
Groupon has changed and matured a lot over the years but some of most “Groupon” memories from the early days include the monkey in the office, the donkey for the Mayor of New York, the paintball fights in the office, the pranks on former CEO Andrew Mason, the cash machine for the sales reps…it was non-stop shenanigans!
How did your Groupon journey begin? What roles at Groupon have you had since then?
I started in Sept. of 2010 as a Sr. Recruiter, was promoted to Director of Recruiting in January 2011. The title stayed the same for the next ten years, but the role evolved more times than I can count. When you are in a new start-up, you have your hands on everything - Tech, Sales, Corporate, Campus, Branding, Programs, and I've touched all of it and still learning every single day. In January 2021, I was promoted to Sr. Director, Global TA, responsible for EMEA, India, and North America. Most recently, I added a Mrs. to my name too. When the best team shows up for your best day, you know you've got something special.
Who or what inspires you?
People who care more about the well-being of their team than their output. I promise you, their output will be greater when you care about them as people first.
How does your work impact Groupon’s mission of building the daily habit in local commerce?
Everything my team and I do impacts our mission. We need to make sure we provide the business with a fully vetted, diverse slate of candidates who meet the requirements for their role and can scale as quickly as Groupon does. Combining experience, skill, and grit with interest and speed is no easy task.
Describe the proudest moment you’ve had at Groupon.
Again, we built this. I’m truly proud of that every single day I walk into work. Who you spend your time with is the most important decision you will ever make. I’m proud of the people who I call coworkers and friends.
You probably have a life outside Groupon; what are you up to when you’re not at work?
Life outside of work is a priority to me. We only have one trip around the sun and we need to take advantage of waking up with a healthy body and mind everyday. I practice what I preach. I make my health, my family, my friends, and my downtime a priority. I’m fueled by coffee, wine, yoga, spinning, and sleep, I do my best to make the most of my time outside of work.
What’s your favorite local business?
All of the non-chains on Southport. I love when I’m ‘Southporting’ and can support all the local businesses in my neighborhood.
