Bold as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Hermes, and stronger than Hercules…you call her Wonder Woman, we call her Courtney Burda.

You’ve been at Groupon for almost 7 years. What about the company has kept you here?

This question is hard because I know my answer is cliché, but it is also the truth. For me, it truly is the people I am surrounded by every day. I think our Recruiting team is super unique, in that, we all work really hard, really well together, and are always able to have a good time doing it. Coming together globally this year has made a huge difference in allowing us to share ideas, learn different ways of operating, and celebrate all of the diverse backgrounds that exist within TA. At the end of the day, seeing us all working towards the same end goal, and being inspired by how truly talented they all are at their jobs, keeps me cranking in this chaos every day.

You oversee a large team. How would you describe your managerial style?

I lead with a long leash of trust. I fully believe if you train your employees to do their job and do it right, you have to allow them that space to do it. My five direct reports are fully in charge of their calendars, their requisitions, and their meetings. I do not chime in asking them if they have done XYZ for the day or week because I know they have. If they need 30 minute breaks in their day to go for a walk, great, if they want to go take a workout class, great, we all need different things in order to do our job to the fullest potential and I give them free reign to run their desks as they see fit. The best part? They always astound me with what they are able to achieve every day, and I fully believe it is the trust I give them to do their job that drives that. All 5 of them always reach out to me with questions and/or in need of support knowing I will drop anything to be there for them, and I think that is a mutual understanding.

On top of that I make it a priority to know what is going on with them outside of work. Life is crazy hard, life the past two years has been even crazier and harder, and if you lose sight of your employees life outside of work, you are losing sight of your employee. Some days, some weeks, and even some months might be tough on them outside of work, and I always have an open line of communication for them to tell me that. That is when the rest of us step up and pick up the slack they may not be able to handle knowing full well that when they are 100% they would do the same. Giving grace is high up there on my list of how to treat others and your direct reports should be no different.

Who or what inspires you?

My answer is two-fold. I am inspired daily by the people around me outside of work, and here at Groupon. At Groupon I have five direct reports and each of them in one way or another inspires me every day to be the best version of myself. We span over five different time-zones and two countries which brings a diverse set of ideas, backgrounds, and ways to approach their desks.

They are all SO amazing at what they do that I am constantly learning from them, being challenged by them, and thus, growing from them. I get excited to see them weekly and push them past their limits because I know that every single one of them can achieve whatever they put their minds to!

Outside of work my mom is my daily aspiration. There is no greater compliment than when people tell me I remind them of her because she is the epitome of strength and love and has fought more battles than I ever hope to, but she always comes out on top. She’s my best friend. To know her is to love her.

How are you staying connected with your team as we’re all working remote?

As I stated above, I am lucky enough to manage 5 recruiters spanning all over the world. That can come with its own challenges, but I also find it uniquely special. I truly value each of them outside of work as well as for the work they do here, so staying in close contact with them is important to me. We depend on weekly 1:1s as a way to catch up personally, run through work questions or issues, and I always end ensuring there is nothing else I can be doing personally to better support them. We have team meetings with those of us in the US weekly and we aim to have one or two FULL team meetings every month. These meetings aren’t always work focused, but it is a great time for all of us to connect on life inside and outside of Groupon. Outside of meetings we have so many ways to communicate these days that I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t speak/ping/Slack each and every one of them!

What do your parents think you do?

Well, I’ll put it this way…on the reg my dad looks at me and asks, “What exactly do you do again?” ... I’ve been here for almost 7 years. Enough said.

Describe what makes the department you recruit for unique.

I primarily Manage and recruit for Sales and as we all know, Sales runs Groupon. So, with that, comes a lot of hiring need changes, last minute increases, last minute pauses, etc. It constantly keeps you on your toes and requires a flexible personality!

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be and why?

I would love to own my own workout studio. Wellness, both mental and physical, for me, starts with movement. I used to teach Barre classes and absolutely loved getting to know the community through exercise as well as watching people achieve lifelong fitness goals. Working out has been part of my entire life. Starting in tots sports all the way through High School soccer and onto the gym and group classes in College. It is a way for me to relieve stress, burn energy, and clear my mind.  To this day I rely on physical movement during tough times, good times, and a tool for mental therapy. It would bring me so much joy to watch it change lives for others as well. Life is tough and we all need an outlet!

Are you active in any of our Employee Resource Groups?

Yes! Parents@Groupon.

Why did you join? What do you get out of it?

I joined the year that I became pregnant with my twins. I realized that I was going to be a working mom, and I wanted to have a voice in the decisions that were being made here for us. The biggest highlight I’ve seen thus far is Project Bjorn. I think that these new policies offer so many (necessary) benefits for working parents and I am proud to see Groupon support that. This is not an easy job, in fact being a working mom is far harder than I ever imagined, but, I stay because I know that Groupon truly values all their working parents.

What is the most challenging part for someone new starting at Groupon?

It takes a person who can adapt to change, think quickly on their feet, and be flexible, to be successful at Groupon. That can definitely be a learning curve for people – but we are evolving and changing every day. You have to put your trust in the business that it is for the best for you, the company, and your job!

What’s your favorite local business?

Sunset Pavillion in Lake Zurich or Ciao Baby in Barrington.

What are some best practices for candidates to keep in mind while they’re applying or interviewing here?

Make sure that you do thorough research on the company and the role that you are interviewing for. There is so much more to Groupon than it being a “fun” place to work. We are constantly changing so be sure that you know where we currently are and where we are going!

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

I am super passionate about helping underprivileged children. Growing up I was the youngest of five girls and my family housed over 30 foster children. It was an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime and something I absolutely plan for my three kids to get to experience as well. It grounded me, made me thankful, and made me appreciate all of the things that I had. There is always someone out there that is in a worse place than you – so be kind.

You probably have a life outside Groupon; what are you up to when you’re not at work?

Well, I did have a life, and I did have hobbies...but now I have three kids under three. All kidding aside, they are my pride and joy and I spend every waking minute (which sadly isn’t much during the week) being with them! They are loud, crazy, and don’t stop moving (all 3 of those descriptors sound oddly similar to how my life at Groupon runs) but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What’s something that candidates are surprised to learn about your hiring team? Or Groupon in general?

Candidates are always surprised to hear about all the different areas Groupon touches. From Getaways, to Goods, to G+ and beyond. They cannot believe we are no longer a “daily deal site.” Before an interview – research, research, research!

If your team could sum you up in 3 words, what do you think they would be?

Well, in an effort to be as honest as possible, I just went ahead and asked them; Empowering, Compassionate, Supportive.
